Royal Academy of Arts
The Kerry James Marshall show at the Royal Academy of Arts was absolutely fantastic! Loved all of the art actually, from A Story of South Asian Art, to all of the art around the member’s café as well, it is always lovely to come back and enjoy my membership benefits (and I leave my card in London so that my mother can go in her own free time).
Getting there and enjoying everything with her was lovely this time, there were not that many people and the people that were there were nice and quiet. I got a few strange looks when I spent some time knelt on the floor trying to get the exact angle for a photo of the optical illusion in Kerry James Marshall’s “School of Beauty, School of Culture “ (2012), inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger's “The Ambassadors” (1533). But that was good exercise for my knees, so all good.
So many ideas for upcoming new art:
Optical illusions to be integrated
Tapestries and vertical asian calligraphy formats
Playing with black on black, perhaps other “ton sur ton” colour play too
Treating political injustice with humour
Addressing ONE key subject that really gets to me, in this case, racism and the beauty of black-ness.
