Summer 2026 in Taiwan

After July and August spent in Residency at Poush, starting and finishing my research paper, it was time to finally enjoy a few weeks off, just as everyone else was coming back to work.

I am, of course, not really capable of relaxing without purpose, so I planned a few visits and meetings in Taiwan - a first! Traditionally, I have always come back to enjoy time with family, which really takes time as we are hundreds and we can’t see everyone every time, because we are all over the island… Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Keelung, etc etc.

This time, planning these meetings not only gave me a certain sense of satisfaction but also a sense of purpose that went beyond the simple filling-of-a-calendar - I can be the bridge between my cultures, if I wish, and I have the contacts and perhaps the power to do so, now I just need to find the partners and spaces that share the same vision for international collaboration.

The trick was the try and tailor each meeting to being an artist, a curator, an artist-curator, or something else. This is still not 100% clear, but my intention always comes across as pure: I am of Taiwanese descent, super excited to practice my Chinese as much as possible, and those who have travelled fully understand why I am eager to offer my contacts in exchange for knowledge or further introductions. Those I have met so far are absolutely fantastic, and those who I am still to meet are to be included in the days to come.

Here I had literally just arrived at Taoyuan Airport before I went straight to TFAM, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, to catch the Surrealism show just before it ended. Perfect timing!

Seeing one of Leonora Carrington’s sculptures with my own eyes was just fantastic, and all of the other art works were just as wonderfully mind-boggling.

Reality and the dream world and really do mix in the most seamless when I am in Taiwan - it feels like I am walking a dream.

This visit had a profound impact on my research paper.

I was given a private tour of the Taichung Art Museum, which was unforgettable.

Here I met the fantastic teams of Modern Art Gallery in Taichung!

The conversation was deeply inspiring and I think we might be onto something concrete for the years to come.

I learnt a great deal from the curation team, management team, and also one of their leading artists.

I also met the teams of Ke Yuan Gallery, and they recommended that I also pay a visit to Moon Gallery.

Very interesting conversations - this time realising that my international scope is actually much too large for local galleries that specialise in highlighting local talent - which seems obvious now that I have it black on white, but the conversation had to be had, in order to be felt! More details coming, as I also learnt a great deal from these moments.

I am seeing with my own eyes that just after Taipei as the capital city and learning place for art, comes Tainan and Taichung, rather than Kaohsiung - which is usually the second largest city.

To wrap things up for now, the (entire) day spent at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts was on a whole other level.

The AC was terrifyingly strong but it was also an extremely rainy typhoon day, so staying there all day was perfect.
